Joan earned a BA in English from Immaculata University and an MA from Fairfield University. She taught Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, International Baccalaureate English and chaired the English Department. Joan has more than 40 years of teaching and leadership experience in English, grades 7 through 12, on both the East and West Coasts. She served on visiting accreditation committees for the Western and New England Associations of Secondary Schools and Colleges and has more than 15 years of experience as an examiner for the International Baccalaureate Association. Joan was named Most Influential Teacher by the University of California and Stanford University and awarded Teacher of the Year by the Tustin Unified School District.

Founder of Perinatal Risk Management and Education Services, Ms. Miller is a certified nurse-midwife with more than 30 years of clinical experience in a wide variety of settings. Her legal background gives her a unique understanding of the impact of law on medicine and nursing. Ms. Miller served as an Assistant Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Northwestern University Medical School and is published in the areas of electronic fetal monitoring, obstetrics, and patient safety. Committed to improving the quality of perinatal health care, she lectures nationally and internationally on a variety of obstetric, women’s health, and risk management topics, currently focusing on the effects of cognitive bias during health care decision-making. Ms. Miller is on the editorial board of the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing, and is an active member of the Association of Woman’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). She is co-author of two textbooks on electronic fetal monitoring, Fetal Monitoring: A Multidisciplinary Approach (7th edition, Mosby 2013), and Fetal Monitoring (4th edition, Lippincott 2013). Ms. Miller spends much of her time teaching an evidence and consensus-based, standardized approach to fetal monitoring interpretation and management, based on the NICHD nomenclature.
